SMA calibration kit with U.FL adapters and cable

Introduction

The standard Kirkby Microwave 85033 7 GHz SMA calibration and verification kit is used to calibrate a vector network analyzer to measure standard SMA devices.

This option 002 kit is identical to the standard kit, but also includes the following 4 parts:

  1. Female SMA to female U.FL cable.
  2. Long-life male SMA to male U.FL adapter, which has a lifetime of several hundred matings.
  3. Long-life female SMA to female U.FL adapter, which has a lifetime of several hundred matings.
  4. U.FL extraction tool.

Notes:

All kits with options require a larger case than the standard kit, in addition to a new custom foam layout. Options numbers can be combined by simply adding the numbers of the options. So there are a total of 7 options.

  1. Option 001 kits have reverse SMA adapter components
  2. Option 002 kits have U.FL components added.
  3. Since 1+2=3, option 003 kits have both reverse SMA and U.FL components added.
  4. Option 004 kits have a 0.96 Nm (4 lb inch) Huber and Suhner torque wrench addded.
  5. Since 1+4=5, an option 005 kit has the reverse SMA components (option 001) and and a torque wrench (option 004).
  6. Since 2+4=6, an option 006 kit has the U.FL components (option 002) and and a torque wrench (option 004).
  7. Since 1+2+4=7, an option 007 kit has the reverse SMA components (option 001), the U.FL components (option 002) and a torque wrench (option 004).

The electrical length of the U.FL adapters will be measured prior to dispatch, and this data put onto the USB stick. If phase measurements are being made, the effect of the electrical length of the adapter can be removed by enabling "Port Extensions" on the network analyzer. If only VSWR/return loss measurements are being made, then the phase delay of the adapters is irrelevant. We can't characterise the SMA to U.FL adapters as accurately as we can the standard SMA kit, due to a number of technical reasons, but the data provide should be more than accurate enough where a U.FL connector is used. For higher precision measurements, a higher precision connector, such as SMA, is needed.

Be aware that standard U.FL connectors are only rated for around 20 matings before they are worn out, but the lifetime of the adapters used in the kit is several hundred matings. The lifetime of the cable is approximately 20 matings.

So the complete option 002 kit consists of:

  1. Female SMA short
  2. Female SMA open
  3. Female SMA load
  4. Male SMA short
  5. Male SMA open
  6. Male SMA load
  7. Male-Male SMA thru
  8. Female-Female SMA thru
  9. SMA male to U.FL male adapter.(only in this option 002 kit and the option 003 kit
  10. SMA female to U.FL female adapter(only in this option 002 kit and the option 003 kit
  11. SMA female to U.FL female cable(only in this option 002 kit and the option 003 kit
  12. SMA Attenuator for verification purposes
  13. 16 GB USB stick with measured data on the attenuator, and the electrical delay of the adapters. The data on the attenuators is supplies as both easy to see PDF files, as well as .s2p Touchstone files. The approximate electrical one-way electrical delay of the adapters is written as text. The USB stick also includes a number of application notes and manuals specific to vector network analyzers.
